BMW i8 Charging Guide: Charge Times, Home Setup, Costs, and Common Problems
TLDR U.S.-spec BMW i8 models use an SAE J1772 connector for AC Level 1 and Level 2 charging. The i8 does not support DC fast charging. BMW’s technical data for the original 7.1 kWh battery lists about five hours on a 120-volt outlet or 2.5 hours on Level 2. The updated 2019 and 2020 Coupe and Roadster have an 11.6 kWh battery. BMW said they could fully charge in under three hours with a suitable home charging station. A powerful 32-, 40-, or 48-amp wall charger will not make the i8 charge beyond the rate its onboard hardware accepts. It may still be useful for a future electric vehicle.
